Working on projects in critical facilities have their own unique challenges.
- Clean and active client environment
- Typically a critical process is occurring even during the project
- Multiple trade groups working in the same area, at the same time
- Working with a very condensed schedule resulting in everyone “hurrying” due to a narrow maintenance window
- Live electrical circuits and plumbing lines are everywhere
- The cost of equipment failure and accident are very high in this environment
- These projects are high-profile with many eyes watching
To help mitigate risk and ensure a successful project for all involved, it’s very important to create and follow a well-thought-out safety plan. Here are a few quick tips that can help.
- Follow all best practices for Lock-Out-Tag-Out (aka: LOTO)
- Discuss with the client and explain to all teams the correct procedure for contacting emergency services if ever required (many larger facilities have an internal procedure for routing 911)
- Clearly communicate the project schedule, potential for issues, and the potential risks associated with all stakeholders
- Discuss and enforce all relevant PPE requirements (safety glasses, vests, hard hats, etc.)
- Clearly mark all no-go areas for the safety of all involved
- Communicate restroom, food, and drink policies
- Dedicate a specific area for staging and took storage
- Make a plan, communicate the plan, stick to the plan
